For many years, East London Chorus raised funds for vital breast cancer research, undertaken by Cancer Research UK (charity no. 1089464). During those years we raised several thousands of pounds for this worthwhile cause and had a great deal of fun and enjoyment doing so.
For 2011, the Committee decided to direct our efforts towards another, equally deserving charity. After much deliberation, they chose the Children's charity 'Barnardo's', for its pioneering work with children and its associations with the east end of London. http://www.barnardos.org.uk/index.htm
In 1866, Thomas Barnardo came to London where he found young children sleeping in the streets and begging for food. In 1867, he set up the Ragged School and started to help the abused, vulnerable, forgotten and neglected children of east London. At his death in 1905, the charity he founded ran almost 100 homes caring for more than 8,500 children. His work has continued and now Barnardo’s helps more than 100,000 children, young people and their families across the nation, every year. They help by providing counselling and support, fostering and adoption and many other means. No matter what the child may have done, or been through, Barnardo's recognises and aims to bring out the potential in each and every one.
The Committee thanks you for all the hard work and hope that you will continue to support us as enthusiastically with this new cause as you have previously.
